It's a loose interpretation that's purposely made for even the simplest minds to comprehend. Do you know how many extinctions there probably were between the time it took from the ape/humans original ancestor and the state we are in today? Apes don't, and can not, just magically transform into humans. If that were the case, wouldn't generic mutations of humans with monkey parts and apes with human parts be more common? Of course, humans had to evolve to get where they are today, but they didn't evolve from the apes we know today.

The apes we see today are a separate evolutionary chain that has a come original ancestor as the human evolutionary chain. No one can even be 100% sure what that original ancestor was, since it was so many years ago.
