Alternative is the dominant form of rock now and purists hate it because it's too pop-sounding. Poor them. I am guessing grunge and glam weren't as well received either back then.

Music genres have their highs and lows. Just like r&b used to dominate in the 90's/early 2000's and now it's fallen to the wayside, so has rock. It'll always be around though, just wait for the current music trends to die out and it'll return in full force soon enough. That's how the music scene works, one genre dominates, then another takes over, etc.

I think Rock music became much harder to market as time went on. Popular music is mostly based off of appeal, personality, and to a certain extent a short shelf life.

It's got to be much easier, and cheaper I'm sure to sell one person as a brand and have them be identifiable than as a band and it is easier for that one person to be relateable and sell their music. I'm sure it's also easier to hook up a single person with a producer and songwriters and have them churn out catchy, but not very substantive hits, that become dated and easily prepare the way for the next hits.

I don't really see things changing for the popularity of rock anytime soon, but it's not really dead, especially if you step away a little bit from the charts.

Firstly, alternative rock has just too many forms and subgenres and secondly, its one of, if not the most widely respected rock genre. Even classic rock purists mostly respect it, maybe because many legendary classic rock acts would be classified as alternative if they were around now.
