Critics are people, too, sis. They're just as flawed as anyone else and it's pretty clear they approach Katy's and Taylor's music differently, more so than is warranted by the quality of their music.

I was actually looking forward to her "dark era" but she probably got scared it was too much of a risk. I legitimately really enjoyed Teenage Dream but Prism felt derivative to me. But of course, that's just my opinion.

No it would have been a bad Katy album IMO because it was effectively treated like a debut album for Taylor's complete transition into only doing pop music. It wouldn't have survived being held up to quintessential pop records (like Teenage Dream).

I definitely believe that the album is being taken more seriously by the critics because it was released by somebody with a bit more respect than someone like Katy. If Katy dropped the same exact album, it wouldn't be as highly regarded because of her past releases' bad reviews. So yeah, I don't think it would be as acclaimed.

But regardless, I don't really believe that Katy is capable of releasing a pop album as solid as 1989.

The people who say 1989 sounds like a Katy Perry album either have never heard 1989 and Katy's discography or are deaf.

I just can't wrap my head around it. Prism, Teenage Dream, and One of the Boys are just completely different from 1989 in so many ways.

I mean, what songs on Katy's album sound like the Jack Antonoff, Nathan Chapman, Ryan Tedder, and Imogen Heap songs? That's like half the album there.

Well let's see.
If she started the era with the Shake It Off video, she would be criticized heavily for appropriating black culture and acting like she's superior to it in the video. That alone would start the era on a bad note.
If she released Out Of The Woods as a promo single, the critics would eat her alive for ripping off their darling Beyonce.
If she made Bad Blood about some female popstar, she would be the one portrayed badly by the media as she has been in the feud. Not to mention most critics would have a problem with the Avril Lavigne-lite sound. Actually most critics would eat her alive for ripping off Avril Lavigne's sound in most of the bubblegum pop stuff in the album.
If she released Welcome To New York she would once again be criticized for 'using' the gay community after getting famous by 'dissing' them.
If she released Blank Space, the critics would rip her to shreds for using their darling Lorde's signature sound.
If she released Wildest Dreams, the gay community especially the critics who belong to it (God knows a heap of the music critics are gay men) would rip her apart for copying one of their favorite girls if not their favorite girl in the industry Lana.
Since she's Katy, that alone would make her lose like 30 points on MC by default.
Since she's not Taylor, their won't be a 1989 bandwagon because of the first week sales that would push the critics to automatically praise it since she's "saving the industry"(Btw there's a difference between a respected album and a bandwagonned album).

So no, if Katy released a bubblegum pop album as simplistic and unoriginal as 1989, she would probably get a 50 score in MC. The reason she hasn't made an album like it is not because she's not talented enough or one of those pathetic excuses (as if it takes some sort of special album to make such a vanilla album with no risks taken), but because she can't afford to make an album like that and get away with it without becoming the music industry's #1 enemy.
