As someone who grew up during the height of their popularities, SF was definitely the bigger game. It's been around longer, has influenced the "combative" gaming genre. Mortal Kombat, Tekken, etc are all results of SF.

It also helps that SF was on Super NES, which always has been, and always will be, a bigger gaming system than Sega.
