In my country prom means a big fancy event with all the seniors' closest family members and friends (there will be a minimum of 1000 people in the audience). In our school system we are divided into classes that stay together more than not, we have only a few freely chosen subjects.
Each senior class has to do a dance at the prom, what could be anything. Or at least that's what they told us. We came up with the concept early September (the prom is being held this Sunday): a medley of hip-hop/pop influenced tracks.
1. Michael Jackson - Thriller
2. Nicki Minaj - Anaconda
3. Soulja Boy - Crank That (Soulja Boy)
4. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Thrift Shop
5. Fergie - A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (feat. Q-Tip, Goonrock)
When Thriller ends, the class is divided into two groups, the girls and one guy doing Anaconda, and when that ends the rest of the boys do the Soulja Boy song, and then the whole class does the other two numbers together.
Today, three days before the big event, the Anaconda dancers were warned, that they (actually we) should tone the performance down, no shorts, no twerking. And the reason? There is one boy dancer (that's surprisingly me) who gives all into that number and some teachers fear that he might be bullied or picked on because of the performance.
I told them that I put up with that before and I can handle that, and that people who know me find it really good, I don't care about the rest, yet they insisted on us wearing long trousers and skipping the twerking part.
So I ask you, what would you do? What is this, if not homophobia and double standards for feminine dancing, oppressing one's aspirations and 3 months of hard work?
TL;DR: They want to tone down the performance of a class at a school event because there is a boy twerking in shorts to Anaconda.
I'm really curious about everyone's opinion, so please share.
