Are RIAA album certifications now a joke? Ariana is platinum
Earlier today, I saw a thread where everyone was having a kiiii over Ariana stating that her album was platinum...however, I then took a look at the RIAA database and discovered that Ariana, in fact, was NOT lying.
My Everything has been certified platinum despite only selling 350-400k in the US thus far. So my question is: are certifications now a joke? Streaming has already started to be included in single certifications which I also didn't like...but at least that seems to make a bit more sense. I feel like adding in streaming to album certifications just really devalues certifications as a whole and now unless official numbers leak we're going to have no real idea about how much any single or album really sells anymore, which is a shame. Do you like the idea of these streaming inflated certifications? Or do you hate it?
No. The industry changes and people should rewarded for reaching a certain amount of units... Whether they are just sales or include streaming and TEA.
If you don't like it, drag the artist every chance you get by bringing up their sales lol.
Yes It's a joke. Can't believe they actually did this. Nothing can be taken seriously from now on, not chart positions, not album certifications, nothing.
Sam Smith's album was certified as well, they lost ANY spark of credibility imo.
Well Sam has sold 800k+ already. He'll actually sell a million so those types of cases aren't so bad.
I'm really afraid other countries are going to start doing this now with their certs. So now, not only will we not have an accurate picture of US sales...but we might not have an accurate gauge on sales ANYWHERE.
Mess at albums that havent even sold over 500k gettin Platinum certifications now! I cant!
