Ed Sheeran has sold over a million copies of his latest album X in the U.K., making him the first artist to achieve that feat within a calendar year since Emeli Sande's Our Version of Events in 2012, according to trade body BPI and the Official Charts Company. Released in June, X spent a total of nine weeks atop the Official Albums Chart and has amassed sales of just over a million copies. BPI expects it to be 4x Platinum (1.2 million) by the end of the year, thanks to anticipated holiday sales.
Sheeran debut album +, released in September 2011, hit the million mark in 2012 and has sold over 1.8 million copies to date. Other artists that have sold a cool mil in recent years include Adele (21 and 19 in 2011), Take That (Progress in 2010) and Susan Boyle (I Dreamed a Dream in 2009).

Did it sell the 1 milli in a calendar year? If so then they're only talking about British acts.
It had to have sold 1mil with in a year seeing as it debuted with 91k and sold 306k in it's 5th week so that's ~400k in 2 weeks excluding the 3 weeks in between and then 47 weeks following so yeah I guess British acts only

They're talking about calendar years (January to December).
