People trying to say "All Taylor songs are the same" very clearly have not listened to more than her singles. Just a few examples:

Fearless - Falling in love with someone who helps you let go of your fears
Fifteen - Growing up into adolescence, losing your innocence, etc
Love Story - Romeo & Juliet inspired love song
Forever & Always - A relationship that was once good, starting to turn sour
The Best Day - Childhood years, growing up, loving your mother
Change - Standing up, making a change in the world/your life
Mine - A story of a girl who was shaken and guarded finally falling in love
Back to December - Apologizing to someone you hurt, admitting you were wrong
Mean - Standing up to rude people
Enchanted - A moment of absolute bliss, falling in love
Innocent - Forgiving someone, understanding that people make mistakes no matter how old they are
All Too Well - Looking back on the memories a broken relationship (masterpiece of a song tbh)
22 - Being young, carefree, enjoying your age/life, etc
Starlight - A story written from the perspective of an old woman, talking about a night when she was young
The Lucky One - A story about a public figure, inspired by Joni Mitchell
Shake It Off - Brushing off critics and having fun on your own no matter what people say.


She's got a lot of variety. Yeah, she writes a lot of songs about relationships, but they're about different subtopics of them, and they're very well written.

Carly is an excellent songwriter. Just because she doesn't write tumblr-level, pretentious yet trite diary-level poetry for teens who want to think they listen to underground indie music featuring a mishmash of empty retro signifiers set to melodies and vocals that could tranquilize an elephant doesn't mean she's a bad songwriter.

I realize critics are generally more qualified to make judgements of music, but at the end of the day it's all subjective, and looking at a critic's score or a Metascore is not an end all be all to determine what's good, what's not, and what's better than what. Basing your tastes around what's "acclaimed" by critics (which Lana's not) is just as infantile as basing it around what's successful. It misses the point of listening to music in the first place and has no real bearing on anything.
