By that I mean, has celebrities become too relatable to the GP? Compared to the glitz and glamour of old Hollywood where celebs were known for living the luxurious life 24/7, modern celebs are often shown doing average stuff that non celebs do like grocery shopping, jogging, etc. And with the invention of social media, stars can communicate directly with fans. Do you think this sort of relation and closeness to the general public hurts star power or strengthens it?
I think it just showcases that celebrities aren't as "larger than life" than what their career would imply. One of the reasons that we saw old hollywood celebs living the way they were was because while tabloids existed and people were invasive, it has become so much bigger and more thorough today. Most "old hollywood" stars were either photoed at events or dinners or something that would require them to wear the posh attire and lavish garments that made them "larger than life" in appearance.
It strengthens starpower. Look at all the YouTube and social media stars who have become super famous and influential to the younger generation simply by vlogging and typing. They just live their normal, everyday lives; the only differences being they constantly have a camera in their face, and they probably have an entire team of people behind them marketing their brand, making them look attractive, and coordinating what they should do to seem relate able.
It has, yes. Celebrities used to be larger than life, unattainable, inaccessible figures. These days, people no longer view them as 'idols' but as people they could possibly befriend.
I blame reality television and social media for this.
The mystique of celebrities is virtually non-existent now. Only people like Prince, Janet, Sade, David Bowie, etc still have that mystique about them because they are extremely private and rarely come out anymore. With Twitter, Instagram and Facebook artists can just upload pics of them at home. That was unheard of in the 90's. That is why celebrity life was so exciting then. Now with Twitter you literally see celebrities getting into fights with other celebrities. It's crazy how things have changed.

Yea, it sorta takes the "iconicness" out of fame IMO.
