But seriously, I think people here are seriously underestimating Melinda's potential for doing well. I read another thread about her album where everyone was saying she'd flop and only sell 500 copies. I 'm starting to think she has a real audience out there for the type of music she's making.

I've been keeping tabs on the release of Melinda's new album, Coming Back To You (loved her on American Idol, and was wondering where she disappared to) and the reviews she's been getting have been awesome to say the least. Most of them suggest that Melinda has made the best album ever recorded by a vocalist from American Idol. Just reading the reviews, I'll be surprised if she isn't up for some Grammy nods next year.

One reason I mentioned Kelly Clarkson in the thread title was because Melinda is currently charting fairly close to Kelly Clarkson's new album on Amazon.coms Top 100 Best Seller charts and Pop charts, when I looked earlier. I think Melinda is currently 86 on Amazon's overall Best Seller music chart, but she keeps moving up. Melinda is also currently at no.8 on the R'n B/Soul Amazon sales chart, sharing company in the top 10 with Beyonce, Duffy, John Legend, Ne-Yo and Rhianna.

Now it's extremely unlikely that Melinda will ever outsell a mainstream pop star like Kelly Clarkson, but I think her postion on Amazon is fairly impressive, considering her lack of radioplay, hype or national media appearences (as of yet). People are pre-ordering her record without much hype involved. I think being a "critics darling" will be the making of the album. Some of the reviews I've read seem to suggest it'll have a lot of appeal to adult listeners who would never ordinarily buy an album from an American Idol alumni.

I suspect she'll come back and promote her album when the live shows begin on American Idol begin. That should help her shift a few copies.

Her album leaked like 2 monthes before the release date, she'll flop if she likes it or not.

I don't think it matters, to be honest. The type of people who would probably buy Melinda's album in the first place aren't going to get bootlegs of her album online. They most likely want to own a physical copy of her album. She defintely skews towards an older, Adult Contemporary audience. I don't think she's singles artist either. But lots of AC artists are like that. People just wait till the album is out and buy the thing, without the benefit of a popular single.

To be honest I found her plain boring in Idol and I'm pretty sure she won't reach to 5k mark, that's if she'll be lucky to pass the 2k mark.

Maybe if she'll go to AI to promote the single and album in that week she could pull 5k.

She performed her single (It's Your Love) live on Entertainment Weekly's "Idolatory" show yesterday. I wasn't sure about the single when I heard the recorded version, but Melinda singing it live absolutely sold me on it. She was fricking awesome. Her albums out next week, btw (Feburary 3rd). Man, you are pessemistic. She's in the top 10 on the Rn' B sales chart on Amazon (ahead of Jamie Foxx and Grammy nominee Jazmine Sullivan), and will probably be in the top 3 by next week. I'd say she's already sold more than 5000, before her record has even been released. Unless Amazon is full of ****, someone is buying her album,

Reviews are comparing her to an updated Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin. There are actually people out there hungry for music/artists like that, though most of them aren't on this site.

Edit; Melinda is now no.6 on the R n'B sales chart on Amazon, ahead of Ne-Yo and Beyonce. I'm betting she'll hit no.1 on the R n' B chart on Amazon.

Okay, the title was actually a joke, but believe it or not, at this very moment, Melinda Doolittle's album actually is outselling Kelly Clarkson new album on Amazon's 100 Best Sellers in music. It's updated every hour, but Melinda is currently at no.60 in the Best Sellers list, while Kelly is at no. 68.

It'll be very interesting to see how Melinda charts. On Amazon, she's selling more than most of the albums being released in the next 3 weeks (including Lily Allen, Kylie Minogue, Wynonna Judd, India Arie and Rhianna's remix album)

She's going to hit no. 1 on the R n B amazon sales chart pretty soon. She's already at no.4, and just has to knock Duffy, Beyonce and Seal out of the way to get the top spot.

And i don't think Amazon chart (is it pre order?) is relevant to some1's succesful, i never heard something special abt that chart.
Even with iTunes album, i take an example Doll Domination was around #30-#40 on iTunes album about 3 weeks ago, but it just charted @#100 billboard album.

See, it's hard for me to gauge...I agree with you that there is definitely an audience out there for Melinda's music, and the majority of this audience is the buying type, not the downloading type. The question is whether Melinda's label has the promotional reach to make that audience aware that her album is out there. Elliot is a good example of how necessary this is - he is awesome but without Hickory Records' success in getting "Wait For You" out there I don't think he would have done nearly as well as he did. Will Melinda have that same luck with a single that is currently getting no play? I don't know. Maybe the radio play will come later.

People who know the album is coming out will buy it. Her appeal or lack thereof is not the issue because the niche is there and she's damn good at it. I just don't know if many people will even be aware that the album is coming out. I think 5K is a bit pessimistic though (I'm assuming we're talking overall sales here), I think she could at least push 10K. Kim Locke's second CD did a little over 20K with relatively the same lack of visibility so surely Mindy Doo can sell at least half that.

And honestly I'd like to think that she'd do much better...I'm cautiously optimistic but that's probably just b/c I'm a fan. I'll predict somewhere between 100K and 200K, and for an small indie label that's actually a nice number.
