I think it's really stupid that it doesn't exist. Think about it. If you were at the police station and you were asked about what happened at the crime scene and you go: "Yesterday..." they're going to think the crime took place in the DAY and the whole investigation will become a mess. They won't end up catching the criminal, finding the right information + possibly send the wrong person to jail. Words like 'fortnight' exist so why not yesternight?

Well I believe if someone was in a police station, they wouldn't want to stay there for long. Saying two words may be too much for the witness so maybe they'd rather just say one.
Also, it makes life a lot easier to make words into one word. For instance:
Fornight --> Two weeks ago
