Because of this they are seen as nonexistent in society. Many people don't even know the poverty these people live in, the fact that they are actually much worse off than blacks and Hispanics in this country. It also has to do with the fact that they are a silent minority. Blacks have historically been outspoken and loud in their rights, Asians for instance keep quiet which causes them to be ignored. And we see the racist treatment they get in the media.

See I have spent a decent amount of time in the US and I've met a lot of native Americans, my almost, at the time, step granny was a native american and therefore my father figure at the time was half native american as well so it's an issue I've been aware of for a long time as well as a culture I've seen first hand and I love it so much, the connection with the spirit of the land and animals is beautiful.
It really breaks my heart that most Americans know only what they have heard come out of other peoples mouths when it comes to Native Americans, I've seen groups of people cross the street because they don't want to walk past a NA, I've seen the reservations first hand and the conditions so many of those people live in are 3rd world and the fact that people see this and do nothing even saying that they deserve it because they are all drunks...it disgusts me to no end. I have never witnessed racism towards a black person, other than kicking a friend of a friend out of my house because he wanted to 'string them up on the borders of town so they'd know they arent welcome' to which I appropriately flipped out...but I am aware that racism towards African Americans is more prevalent due to the population and I also know there are awful, awful people out there trying to promote racism and hurt, especially towards the AA population, but it seems to me that everyone has accepted their idea of NA, they are turned into stereotypes and people don't really get outraged over it, not publicly or wide scale anyway, it's accepted by everyone for the most part.
It's a human rights issue, no one should live under oppression, it's not an issue of 'stand up for your race' for me and more of a 'stand up for the human race, stand up for being decent to one another' issue but I am a privileged white girl so I know my opinion on any of this is based on other peoples experiences, I have never been oppressed. I think that letting that sort of treatment go on, for any ethnicity, is wrong and accepting it is not far behind supporting it, so I refuse to accept it.
