I think that's exactly why they stan for her tbh. The elephant in the room is obviously the Gaga/Madonna thing. Madonna was known for religious iconography, integrating homosexuality and Catholicism, etc. and when Gaga started doing that, she got branded with Madonna comparisons. Some were positive, like "the next Madonna" and others were negative, like accusations of plagiarism and "trying to be" Madonna.
Katy has steered clear from all of that. There's not very many similarities to Madonna. First it was 1950s pin-ups, then a candy theme, then a prismatic/holographic theme.
Madonna and her fans clearly don't like that Gaga did things that were overtly similar to Madonna (both visually and sonically) so obviously they're going to support someone Gaga and her fans are have a rivalry with.
That's just my two cents.
