Winner determined by online (multi)voting. As irrelevant as EMAs, VMAs etc. That's how one of the worst reviewed albums of all time won AOTY.
All these awards are good for only one thing, publicity.
That's why the Grammys are still the most prestigious but even the Grammys are going downhill, just look at the obvious snubs this year.

as i wrote before in this thread, at first I found the album really boring but the more I kept listening the more I started to realize how good each song is
