Pharrell has been relevant since the early 2000s, and probably even earlier since I wouldn't remember if he had a presence in the music industry in the late 1990s (too young to know at the time).
He's definitely not a fad. I would call the 1-2-3 punch of Blurred Lines, Get Lucky, & Happy a huge comeback, though.
Even when he wasn't as popular, he was still producing here & there. It's not like his name ever fell off the radar of quintessential modern producers. His sound just didn't fit what people wanted in the late 2000s-early 2010s at all. A lot of his stuff is funk R&B flavored, which wasn't a formula for a hit until last year.
