In fairness though, about 3 of those 5 million came after the release of Like a Virgin. Didn't Nile Rodgers say it had just been certified Gold when they started on LaV? That's more than half a year on release.
But then, Holiday was her breakthrough hit, and then Lucky Star and Borderline were smashed. LaV is where she became a real pop icon and a major player, which is probably how she's referring to it here.
