You can't just impose RECENT European sensibilities on countries with other cultures, how hypocritical. It's not relevant to soccer. You realize being gay was illegal in the UK until 1967? So you're saying England should not have been allowed to win the 1966 cup? You can't expect every country to instantly snap to. There are different rates of progress for each nation. It's not like they are going to jail gays who just come to watch some soccer.

I could give -5 ***** about alcohol sweetie.
What's relevant is the rights of the humans that are both playing and watching these football games. It matters to the lgbtq folk that are going to the world cup with their spouse/significant other whether or not they will be allowed to hold hands in public, or smooch their lover when their team makes a goal. It matters to the lgbtq players who are still in the closet over fear that their exposure could lead to the end of their career, and possibly their life.
Nobody cares how long any of these countries have or have not been providing humans with the fair and equal rights that they all deserve. What matters is what they are doing NOW. And right NOW, Russia is in a shitstorm of human rights issues regarding their lgbtq population and Qatar still has laws that are akin to modern-day slavery. These are facts.
All the while there are much more open and accepting countries that could host the games without us having to worry about any of these issues.
Yes, these countries have beautifully rich histories that should be celebrated, but I fail to see how that has to do with this discussion. But talk about the pot calling the kettle black. You can't just dismiss an issue like that saying "it has nothing to do with the sport", then turn around and try to refocus attention on something else that also has nothing to do with the sport.
