Both side are being biased with their figure to make their side look better. One choose "domestic" hoping readers won't notice. The other side chose "projected" next 12 months earnings of $6,000,000.

FACT #1: $500,000 domestic (USA) streaming in the last 12 months
FACT #2: $2,000,000 worldwide streaming in the past 12 months

$6,000,000 is the projected figure for the coming 12 months (roughly half a million in the last month)

Taylor and her team will regret this decision.

That's it? For complete access to her discography?

Imagine how little others get.

Almost the same money as selling albums in this climate.

In other artists, it's more.

Most of Taylor's streams are coming from the US, there's no way her streaming payout outside the US alone is three times the US number.

Not likely. $6 million a year isn't a lot of money to them.
In return, she got all these publicity. For an artist, being talked about is a good thing.


Spotify will do just fine though. 12.5 million paying subscribers and 40 million ad-supported users. $2 billion in revenue in the next 12 months.

Spotify has 12.5 million paying subscribers worldwide.

USA has only 3.5 million of that.

Taylor is not just popular in the USA.




If Taylor label doesn't dispute the $2 million figure, I'm sure it's legit.

They used $500,000 or $496,044 number but put the "domestic" part on it.

If worldwide is say $998,927, they would use it (half domestic, half rest of the world). They go with domestic to make the figure look better for their PR.

Her label received 500k from domestic streams. Not her. The rest of the money was a) paid to her WW label (UMG) and b) divided among her, her co-writers, co-producers, mixers and sound engineers. When you take that into consideration, she hasn't really been paid a lot.

The math is simple:

Spotify pays about $0.006 per stream.

So $2 mil / $0.006 = 333,333,333 streams.

If there were more streams, there will be more money.

$2 million is a lot for one company on one platform

Look at the big picture, streaming will be #1 in 2015 in the US.

2015 prediction: STREAMING WILL BE KING

#1 Streaming: $2.5 billion (up 28%)
#2 Download: $2.1 billion (down 12%)

It isn't about the money. Who cares. Stop talking about it and making such a big deal out of it.

It's about the fact that she doesn't want people listening to her music for free which people can do on Spotify. If Spotify let Taylor do what she wants to do (make it so only premium users can listen to her music, and not free ones), then there wouldn't be a problem. Music is art, and art should be paid for. It's their loss! Taylor doesn't care about the money. This $2 million or $6 million is nothing for her. It is the principal that she believes these things shouldn't be free on services like this where it is on-demand listening.

Spotify will make $2 billion in revenue in the coming 12 months and Spotify pays 70% of that. If a label don't want a piece of that pie, it's their rights.

Spotify paid $2 million for 333 million streams in the last 12 months.

333 million streams isn't a lot when Shake It Off has been streamed 263 million time already on Youtube.

Tbh, this is pretty stupid. Taylor has more money than she needs obviously. If she did this to make a point for unestablished artists, then that's great. But I just see both sides throwing monetary figures back and forth.
