In some countries atheists are sentenced to death for their lack of belief.
In the United States, "several polls have shown that about 50 percent of Americans would not vote for a qualified atheist for president."
It's considered political suicide to run as an atheist in the United States and it is actual suicide in various Middle Eastern and African nations. Seems pretty equivalent to the homsexual struggle for rights in the same areas (US and Middle East).
Why do people fear and distrust atheists? It's absurd. I mean >50%? What's wrong with people.
Atheists and Christians BOTH need to learn to leave each other alone.
It's not the job of Christians/theists to force God upon atheists (which they do) and it's not the job of atheists to force theists to stop believing (which they do).
Until atheists and Christians both respect each other's mindsets (which they don't), then there will always be a problem. Unfortunately, in a deeply Christian country like the US, it will end up being atheists who suffer for it.
In an ideal world we would all have respect for each other and be able to see past differences in religion etc but people are too afraid of change to function normally in society

Religion followers have promoted the huge lie that Atheism involves having no morals or (even more absurd) are satanists. We basically go by the Golden Rule.
The same reason why Christians are discriminated against in Islamic countries, religious people in the former Soviet Union and North Korea, Muslims in the West. As long as you belong to a religious minority you are subject to stigma and discrimination.
