I believe that nationalism and patriotism in the U.S. is way too high. People have to remember that a lot of things U.S. soldiers have done (think Iraq and Afghanistan, for example) have not really helped to "defend the freedom of the US." In fact, I would argue those operations only hurt the U.S.' credibility among the public in the Middle East.
I don't like it that
God Bless America is sung during the middle of the 7th inning during every baseball game, and not just because I'm an atheist. It's a passionate belief of mine that people's levels of nationalism here (which are too high) are reinforced by these constant reminders that AMERICA IS #1 and GOD BLESS AMERICAN TROOPS.
A lot of Americans need to take a step back and think about why they are so lustfully appreciating a country that wants to police the world for no good reason.
This is not to say that I don't like America. The U.S. is one of the best places to live in in the whole world. But I think people need to stop blindly displaying nationalism and patriotism towards the country because all it really does is increase the braggadocio of the population.
This quote from the article nicely sums up my thoughts:
Quote:
No American freedom is currently at stake in Afghanistan. It is impossible to imagine an argument to the contrary, just as the war in Iraq was clearly fought for the interests of empire, the profits of defense contractors, and the edification of neoconservative theorists. It had nothing to do with the safety or freedom of the American people.
