Rose McGowan sorta apologizes to gays
Quote:
Where does it say that because of a man's sexual preference, I don't get to point out a group's character defects? It's a human rights issue. Misogyny endangers me as a human. It also endangers the LGBT community. Empathy to women's international plight isn't making it better. Education in activism will. Could I have articulated my frustration in a better fashion? Undoubtedly. For that I apologize, but I stand by the overall point.

I'm speaking about MY experience as a disenfranchised activist.I apologize because I like speedos (they're funny,) I like floats and I'd probably like Molly if I tried it. #human

I made a dumb generalization, and for that I apologize, For everything else I said, no, I will not. Gay men certainly aren't MORE misogynistic than heteros, but I've met some that have come damn close, In some ways it's more damaging, because it's coming from supposedly enlightened people. I do expect more from a group of people that understands discrimination. ... What I want is for gay rights activists to help other disenfranchised groups. These activists are experts while so many other groups flounder. It's time to share the wealth and knowledge

I agree with her!
She could've phrased what she said better, but the LGBT community should be helping other disenfranchised groups.

Everyone should be helping each other. I don't get why she singled out gay people. I can only imagine the uproar had she replaced gay people with black people.

Well good for her for the clarification, her point is somewhat valid although she's still referring to one faction of the gay community as opposed to the whole. I care about feminism.

I agree with the heart of what she's saying (that misogyny is real and education/awareness must take place to combat it) but this passive aggressive apology, with an unnecessary/stereotypical drug reference, is not it

well, it is kinda true. not for all, of course, but only cause it's another group of men telling women how to behave and treating them badly doesn't make them not misogynistic. they're just as much at fault like the rest of them who are behaving like douches.
she shouldn't have generilized it and could have worded it better.

YES tell them. Rose was right and y'all know it. Any one who hangs w gays or who has visited a gay bar at least once knows many gays are misogynists, **** shame, body shame and shout how girls are dumb and how their bodies and ******* are disgusting. Yall speaking about generalization but when a 'straight white man' complains about it yall **** yourselves. Well generalization is an effective way to be heard and send your point across, so everyone feels concerned, the more you gain in rights and visibility the more you'll have to learn to deal w it.

I find that generalizations, esp with the association of harmful stereotypes actually do the opposite, it turns the discourse into a toxic argument. It becomes so vitriolic on both sides. People will never be okay with being generalized because to be generalized is to be denied your experiences and the choices you've made in life. No one likes that, that's simple enough to understand I think.
Most of the time generalizations are defended by saying it's the plight of marginalized people to generalize their oppressors - but in this case, Rose (a cis white woman) is generalization people who are less privileged than her. Isn't that like, against the SJW code or something?

What she said was true though, the gay community is one of the most judgmental communities, this forum and its post are proof enough

You all are talking about the gay bar kind of gays. Not every gay is like that, so yeah, she is wrong. I for one am gay and support equality on a full scale... not just gay rights. Don't think gay stuck up twinks speak for all of us. And no, generalization are the pits, those are the tumblr nazis that say #yesallmen.
