Spotify is going to lose if they don't find a way to pay artists and labels a fair amount of money. It won't take long for this trend to take hold and for other big-name artists to begin pulling their records. Spotify keeps saying they've paid over a billion dollars to the industry thus far, but that's not that much money when you take into account the amount of records on Spotify and how many streams there are. One side has to cave in and change their ways... and well, we all know how much the music industry loves to change.

This.
Spotify and Pandora's models are not going to work in the long term. You guys may be all gung-ho for Spotify right now because you (the listeners) are the only ones who benefit from it. Let's be honest, Spotify users are paying next to
nothing for pretty much all the music they could ever ask for.
With abysmal payouts like $1.00 for 700+ plays, that's absolutely nothing. Especially when their "a billion+ dollars" claim is spread out between millions of artists and songs.
Taylor may not win the battle in the short term (though I'm sure her plan was never to remove her songs forever), but the music industry will win in the long run as more artists start boycotting and pulling their work from Spotify. They need to figure out a way to pay these artists FAIRLY. A fraction of a cent per play is not going to help these unknown co-writers, producers and composers put food on the table.
