Essentially, the House and Senate make bills with 50% majority. President can veto them. Then the veto is overridden if there is a 66% majority. Since the Republicans have a majority of Congress, but not a 66% majority, basically nothing extreme on either side will be passed.

It's one of the main branches of government. The Senate and House of Reps. will now both be controlled by Republicans, and the executive branch (President) is Democratic. That likely means that nothing will get done over the next two years, or that the Senate/House will start reversing things that the Democrats did these last six years.

What's funny is how little many of these senate candidates differed from each other. I don't mind the shift. I like a shake-up.

On the federal level, we vote for three main things:

Senators, Representatives, and Electoral College voters.

Judges, presidents, etc. are all chosen by those already in power.
