But temperatures were also as low as minus 10°C in Farnborough, Hants, and Capel Curig, North Wales, and minus 8°C in parts of Devon and Somerset.
It was warmer in Icelandic capital Reykjavik — where the coldest spot was minus 6°C.
The big chill brought misery to tens of thousands of motorists left stranded in a record day for car breakdowns.
The AA and RAC said the situation was the worst since 2004 with 50,000 call-outs in just two days.

Many schools failed to reopen after the Christmas break, and homes and businesses battled to repair burst pipes and boiler problems.
The extreme conditions also led to the SEA freezing at Padstow, Cornwall, a WATERFALL doing the same in Brecon, South Wales, and ICICLES eight foot long at a marina in Wordsley, West Midlands.
As the cold spell looked set to continue, pensioners were advised to take extra precautions.
Heating bill payouts to the old and vulnerable have already topped £100million.
A Met Office official said: “The icy weather is set to carry on at least until the end of the week.”

Meanwhile, cases of flu rose 25 per cent in the last week but the worst of the outbreak is thought to be over, an expert said today.
Professor Steve Field, chairman of the Royal College of GPs, said the latest figures showed that flu had peaked.
But he said there had been a rise in the number of people suffering bronchitis, which would put pressure on hospitals.
Data for England and Wales showed an increase in flu cases from 41.3 per 100,000 people during the Christmas week to 51 per 100,000 in the first week of January.
