It's just like when Taylor's fanmail was thrown in to dumpsters; it's done by her team and not by the artist. After a while, the gifts became cumbersome and sometimes even dangerous for the artist and so they get taken care of by the team.
I'm guessing the guy was also sending threatening/creepy letters and her team got legitimately scared. There's also a chance they tested the mail and it was positive for arsenic residue, or something crazy like that. I wouldn't jump to conclusions when the article is so empty.
