You guys whine and moan about the abysmal record sales this year but then you turn around and go support Spotify when someone big like Taylor tries to take a stand against them. Do you realize how much artists/songwriters/producers ACTUALLY get from Spotify streaming? It's close to nothing. These people work their asses off to make music. The fact that they "make money from touring and merchandise and sponsor deals" is completely irrelevant because they shouldn't HAVE to do all that to make money. They're musicians, they should be making money from music.
And what about all the smaller artists who don't have big major labels backing them, but still have to pay a huge cut to Spotify and to their label, and they don't get billions of streams like Taylor or Gaga or Katy? They're really the ones losing here, not the big guys. If anything, Taylor is doing this for the industry, not for herself. She doesn't need it.
I don't know what the solution to the problem is. Maybe Spotify needs to raise their subscription price. Maybe get rid of the free model like Google Play. Maybe limit people to only streaming the album a certain number of times before forcing them to pay up? I don't know, but the current model is clearly not working. Props to Taylor for taking a stand.
