If you've spent time on feminist blogs lately or in the social-justice-oriented corner of Tumblr, you have likely come across the Trigger Warning (TW): a note to readers that the material following the warning may trigger a post-traumatic stress reaction.

What are your opinions on these?
This is when you ask people to give triggers when they're saying something emotionally traumatic like talking about rape, anorexia, abuse, etc.

Ex. a conversation with a friend today:
Me: Omg, 3 people got raped at this halloween event two nights ago!
Friend: Jesus ****ing christ! Give a trigger warning next time.

I think for the most part they are getting too extreme.

I don't personally see the reasoning behind them (as someone who has suffered trauma).

I think it's a bit over the top but I'm also in no position to speak for those who have endured trauma.

I've literally never anyone around me say "trigger warning" before I read this thread. Looks like you really do learn/hear something new everyday.


But from your definition of it, I get why people do it.

I honestly stopped believing these friend stories after the first one. We get it, you want to mock these people and get people to bash them.

Queer people use it all the time. That's why I'm distancing myself.

Well I can only speak for anorexia, but trigger warnings are 100% necessary in order to stick to recovery.
