It's not THAT common in the church. Obviously, it shouldn't be happening at all, but the news will ALWAYS report it when a high profile religious leader does something like this, so it makes it seem like it's more common than it is. If a normal atheist person does this it would get nowhere near as much media attention, maybe none at all, since atheists aren't held to as high standards as religious leaders.
But also, the fact that they can't have sex probably doesn't help. Also people are generally very trusting of their religious leaders, which is fine in the 99% of cases when they're actually good people, but in the cases where they're a pedophile or terrorist or whatever it can obviously have terrible consequences. I think religions need to do more to ensure these horrible people don't get into leadership positions where they can abuse the fact that people trust them so much. I'm glad in this case they were going to fire the priest.
