They're not what the human race needs, but what the human race needs =/= what the planet and universe needs. Our needs should not be considered greater/more important than the needs of the oceans, the glaciers, the whales, etc.

It's applicable to every other animal species, and has been pretty much proven for thousands of years...so why not to the human species?

Yep

I think so too.
I mean, I think there are two view points: what's good for mankind vs what's good for the earth. Those two often contradict. If a plague wiped out 2 Billion human beings, that would be TERRIBLE for mankind, but good for the Earth and all the other animals living on it.
