Katy and Beyonce's album sales genuinely shocked me. I don't know why I thought they were at least 2x plat.

it's actually comparably low. the population of the UK is around 64million, the population of the US is about 316 million, that's nearly 5 times more (64 x 5 = 320) so you need to sell 300,000 copies of an album to platinum in the UK, 5 times that is 1.5million which is a much bigger number that the 1million you actually need to sell to go platinum in the US.

Absolutely not, because the U.K. albums market itself isn't five times smaller than the U.S. one. The current thresholds in the U.K. are also too high now, anyway. Note that the U.K. albums chart, unlike the Billboard 200, excludes compilations which may explain why overall sales seem lower than what they actually are.

It's not like there are so many soundtracks slaying. Besides, it's even better gives a chance to normal albums.
