I think it was some sort of throwback to show people he is still the same usher as he was during the confessions era.

Since a lot of 'fans' are complaining he doesnt sound like that anymore.

I think that the idea for good kisser and SCTGITYwas bringing back that confession sound but in a updated version. But people still dont think thats enough..

Edit: for real its crazy how people still want him to make the same music like he did 10 years ago

Yeah, I wish people would let Confessions go. Let the man evolve, it's part of why he's still around and has had the 20+ year career. You can't be out here making the same song/album your whole career.
