It depends on the scale you look at. If you look at how the disease manifests, then it's autosomal recessive. If you look at the microscopic blood cells, it's actually codominant.
Individuals with both alleles will have both round and sickle cells, and that is enough for resistance to malaria (since they act at the microscopic level), but the symptoms of the disease will not show up at the macroscopic level because half of the cells are round.
