10. Coldplay “Viva La Vida"
Album: Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends
Genre: Alternative
Producer: Coldplay, Brian Eno, Markus Dravs, Rik Simpson
US Billboard Hot 100: #1
I’ve always been fascinated by Coldplay’s videos and not so much by their music, but this time their music got more attention from me than their amazing videos, and I can actually go back and enjoy some of their old stuff now. The first thing to notice is Chris Martin’s unmistakable voice, his vocals are on point, and as soon as you hear the first line you can tell it’s a Coldplay song. The song is lyrically perfect about getting replaced from a loved position, in this case using clever words about Jerusalem bells and Saint Peter, while they describe the story of a king getting dethroned as opening line suggests
“I used to rule the world.” The instrumental arrangement is mind blowing as well. The video
Viva La Vida is a work of art, a moving oil painting of the band performing, just amazing. After releasing this song, Coldplay should be considered as one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
09. Christina Aguilera “Keeps Gettin‘ Better”
Album: Keeps Gettin' Better - A Decade Of Hits
Genre: Electropop
Producer: Linda Perry
US Billboard Hot 100: #7
Christina came back this year and gave us a little taste of what she has in store for 2009, releasing a greatest hits album two brand new tracks and two re-makes of
Genie In A Bottle and
Beautiful, and all I can say is that I wanna hear more. After a few listens, I was addicted to the track and I couldn’t stop playing it, but that happens to me with almost every song she puts out. This time Christina decided to go for a more electro sound that definitely caught my attention immediately and let’s not forget to mention the catchy chorus,
“Some days I'm a super bitch, up to my old tricks, but it won't last forever…“ She is known for her amazing voice, and while her vocals are very confident, the song doesn’t ask for the mind blowing vocals that she is used to deliver, so it‘s nice to hear this new sound. I’m probably one of the few people that actually enjoyed the music video, it wasn’t as bad as some people said it was. It’s very obvious that with a talent like that you can only keep getting better and I’m really looking forward to her album coming out this year.
