1D's goal is to make catchy, fun pop music. They do a great job with that. No one said they were trying to be David Bowie
I think what sucks about Katy so much right now is that she talks about songwriting and how X song is supposed to be some meaningful thing inspired by X in her life. She tries to be ~deep~ with songs like Unconditionally and Ghost and they just fall flat because Katy is the definition of vapid. If she made a whole album full of Dark Horses she would be a lot better off.
At least with Teenage Dream, she didn't pretend like she was doing anything other than making fun pop. I could sort of get behind that, even if most of it still sucked.
