Yeah but still, that doesn't explain why Italian music is so unpopular on Spotify. You're not buying anything on there, you just listen.

It's pretty clear. The biggest hit songs are foreign. Radio spins like crazy those song, way more than italian's. Obviously there are some expectations.. but even on Itunes it was that way. The young generation listen more to english songs, that's for sure. But italian acts like Laura Pausini, Tiziano Ferro, Emma, Alessandra Amoroso and Marco Mengoni are plenty of youn fans. We need even to consider that Spotify still isn't a so popular thing in Italy, so maybe with times and the right promotion from the italian labels it could become a thing even with the older demographic.
What surprise me more is why foreing acts aren't selling albums at all, considering all the promotions they get from radio. Radio are still a thing in Italy. I mean Taylor Swift is getting major exposure right now, but she will struggle hard to sell 10k in total in album sales in Italy. That's the way it is.

Apparently U2 had the biggest first week sale of the year with their new album, Songs Of Innocence. So they're an exception.

Well, obviously they are. They are U2. I was talking about the huge radio artist, that italian radio spin like there's no tomorrow, but still they can't move albums. U2 are one of the biggest group of history.

Senza Scappare Mai Più is being promoted on heavy rotation through the ads of Spotify. They may bring some more streams

I've just found out from a newspaper (Il Sole 24) the music market in Italy is up 4% and digital is up 20% this year so far!
