In Madonnas case, the reason for the the backlash were the controversies, not quality of her music, vids or performances (in contrast to Gags). And she overcame it relatively quickly.
She had her most successful US #1 single 2 years after, acclaimed Evita 4 years after and released RoL 5 years and 4 months after Erotica and Sex book.

My point was not to discredit Madonna, I love her too. What I was trying to say was that Madonna had a decline in her career too, and in terms of time, it wasn't too far from her peak (arguably 1990 with Blond Ambition).
