They're meant to promote the album. But that doesn't mean that they should not be successful. Fans get videos, performances, interviews, all because of the singles.
Of course, if they fail to do so then they are just forgettable hits and it means something if despite being big hits, they didn't excite people to go out and buy the album.
I feel the chart success of the singles should be translated into albums' sales, like this song is so good that I'll go and spend my money on the full album because the artist is worthy of that investment, these days everybody can get a hit but not everybody can sell their albums.
This is true and, sadly for those who think their faves' hits are the defining aspect of modern music, will be true as long as the album format is focused upon by the industry (and it still is, for the record). Labels still release singles with the intent of promoting the more expensive, revenue-generating album.
They are and if they weren't artist wouldn't bother releasing accompanying albums with them. You can't make this fact less relevant just because your fave a hit single after singles, yet still push the same amount of albums as others without hit singles.
They should all match up. As of recent, Adele is the only one who has SHOWN how hit songs are SUPPOSE to push and sell the album.
