It is. People tend to relate dentistry with making "big bucks", and with the current job scene where there is an overload of doctors, being a dentist would give more job opportunities.

Yes. I really don't understand why you need hundreds of As at GCSE and A Level just to poke around in people's mouths

Dentistry is more than just 'poking' in people's mouths. The majority of dental work involves surgery - in the form of removing people's tooths and/or reconstructing faulty teeth etc. It's a job where you need to be really precise and there really isn't any room for mistake. Damage the wrong tooth or cause paralysis if you hit a bad nerve? Enjoy getting your ass sued and credentials damaged! That's why they are paid well, high risk involves high reward.

USA- No

Not really, money to be made but it's got a kind of cop-out tag to it? Idk, hard to explain. For example I would say doctors, nurses, architects, engineers etc have a bit more respect.

Um, generally any career that requires you to obtain your doctorates is considered prestigious in the USA..
