If you're asking about the names or symbols that identify the numbers which you are asking about, then essentially "just because." Somebody at some point determined that they were the best or easiest identifiers for the concepts which they represent.
If you're asking about the state of numbers themselves... also "just because." Essentially, numbers are an intrinsic element of spacetime and reality. To be more clear, there is always a definite quantity of every value, whether that quantity be positive, negative, zero, or imaginary. The quantities represented by "one" and "two" in the English language or "1" and "2" in the alphanumeric set of Latin characters are expressly defined as being a single unit of some thing or value and a single unit coupled with another unit. Therefore, when you add "1" to itself, you obtain the exact definition of "2," thereby allowing you to define your result as "2."
