Man posed as guest and stole wedding gifts
Quote:
WESTPORT, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Westport police are looking for a man they say posed as a guest at a wedding reception and stole gifts from the bride and groom.
The man, believed to be between 25 and 35 years old, fled the Longshore Inn just after 7 p.m. Saturday with a birdcage filled with wedding cards, many apparently containing cash for the couple, police said.
Police used dogs to try and track the man. They recovered the empty cage.
It’s unclear how much money was stolen.
The man was captured on video surveillance cameras, and police released screen grabs in hopes somebody might recognize the wedding crasher.
Westport Police Lt. Vincent Penna said the video, which shows the suspect on the phone in the lobby of the hotel, indicates the crime may not have been the first time the alleged thief pulled off such a heist.
“It looks like this was a ruse that maybe we’re hoping he had perpetrated before — kind of blended in with the crowd, dressed nicely, like he was attending the wedding,” Penna told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau.
None of the wedding guests interviewed by police were able to identify the man.
“People may not know everyone who’s at the wedding, so he kind of capitalized on that,” Penna said.
