It was a top 40 hit, yes. I don't see what's hard to understand about that.

It was a flop compared to what we know Xtina is capable of, and probably a loss for the label considering the money they put into it to promote it, film a music video, etc. That's why ATRL drags it.

But for other artists that would be a true hit for them and lead to bigger and better things. Just off the top of my head, Paramore's Misery Business peaked outside of the top 20, but led to a platinum album, their own real fan base, the opportunity to tour around the world, etc. Misery Business was a hit!

Look at it like this, the world has billions of people, and millions that are trying to break into the music industry. How many of those people have made it to the top 40 of the Hot 100?

While I agree some songs in the Top 40 may not seem like hits (or at least something that's a flash in the pan) but it doesn't take away from the fact that cracking Top 40 equals great success.

I just had a thought about this. A top 3000 from millions is in the minority and thus difficult, does that make the #2999 a hit? I'm not saying this in a patronizing way. It seems to fall under the reasoning of calling a #38 song a hit.

A lot of the BIGGEST names of the pop world have struggled to get a #38 peak, only in the last 5 years: Britney Spears (Break the ice, Radar, Criminal, Oh La La, Perfume), Beyoncé (Party, Countdown, XO, Pretty Hurts), Lady Gaga (G.U.Y.), P!nk (I don't believe you, Funhouse, True Love), Madonna (Give it 2 me, Miles away, Celebration, Girl gone wild, Turn up the radio) and Rihanna (Rockstar 101 and Right Now).

And those are the biggest popstars, now imagine how hard it is for the rest of the artists.

Your understanding of music is based on iTunes ,MTV and VH1. There was time a in the US when radio was king. Top 40 radio play list still applies to today. Your definition of a flop is flawed.

Every song on the Hot 100 is technically a hit. Like, there are literally thousands of songwriters and artists out there trying to make it big. Even songs that we consider flops like G.U.Y., Crazy Kids, Right Now, Criminal, Run The World, etc are considered hits.

It's just that stans have such a dumb high standard for singles.
