Malala Becomes Youngest-Ever Nobel Peace Prize Winner
Malala Yousafzay (of Pakistan) and Kailash Satyarthi (of India) were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2014 for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.
Malala, 17, is the youngest recipient of the prize since it was created in 1901. Mr. Satyarthi is 60. The $1.1 million prize is to be divided equally between them. Info about their work can be found in the official Nobel Peace Prize press release.
Quick note for those of you who don't know Malala: "She came to global attention after she was shot in the head by the Taliban...for her efforts to promote education for girls in Pakistan. Since then, after recovering from surgery, she has taken her campaign to the world stage, notably with a speech last year at the United Nations." (CNN)
I am annoyed at how some people (not here but in general) try to bring her achievement and engagement down by claiming she only received the NP for "surviving" when she only was the Taliban's target because she was standing up for her beliefs in the first place. And she has been such a brave young woman, spreading her story and inspiration, her message, all over the world - with constant danger and threats against her! - this girl, this Woman deserves the Nobel prize!
