Honestly, it makes sense to me. I can understand where monsters are coming from. Yes, Gaga's a better live vocalist and is never off-key, whereas Katy's had her fair share of performances where she's been slightly off. But at the end of the day, what's the point of doing a half-time show with a few hits from 2009-11. She needs to get back to the top of the pop game if she wants to get a Superbowl half-time show. And those hits need to be appealing to straight people of all ages as well, not just self-proclaimed outcasts and young gay guys aged between 15-21. I'm not saying they're the only people who listen to Gaga's music, but the whole concept of the "little monsters" has gone so far that they almost seem separate from the GP. She has the biggest group of devoted, loving, super-stans, but doesn't really seem to have a large amount of casual fans. It's either go hard or go home. And I think you need a large amount of casual fans in the GP to do the SuperBowl, not a sizeable, dedicated, obsessed stan-base. The SuperBowl is for everyone. Not just a niche corner of the market (gay teenagers and teens who feel like misfits)

Gaga being the better performer is neither here nor there. We all know that. It's not about who's first (Bruno jumping the "queue" last year said enough), but rather who's the best fit for the stage right now. Katy is a logical choice as she's more 'in' right now, and any concern of disconnect between her family friendly pop stuff and the football fans will be excused because they fancy her.
