Still in purchasing power parity. The real deal will be when China becomes the n°1 country in the world in terms of nominal GDP. The US took that spot around 1900 (from, you guessed it, China, which declined after the Opium wars and the collapse of the Qing Dynasty).

Wages in Chinese urban areas are increasing fast and have topped the wages of some Eastern European countries (some of which are in the EU). 80 million people in Europe live below the poverty line and almost 50 million Americans are on food stamps, and it keeps increasing. Around 300-400 million Chinese now have a standard of living comparable to Americans and Western Europeans, that's still close to a billion left but it's improving fast.

Sure there are lots of poor people but poverty is no where near as bad as say India, where its almost unsalvageable.

I think what's troubling is the cultural and political differences of China compared to the West. To quote a Boston Legal episode:
Quote:
China is a lovely country, I've always wanted to visit their walls. But the idea of China coming over here, however, is terrifying, I'm sorry. We know their atrocious record on human rights. They do not support freedom of speech, freedom of religion, they do support Sudan, thereby contributing-to the genocide in Darfur, they turn a blind eye to female infanticide, they force abortions, they practice torture-- China's economy will overtake ours, that's not even-a-question any more. They have so much money now invested here [in America], add to that the devaluation of our dollar, they pretty much own us already. Their goal is to become a civilizational power, they have the wealth to achieve it, and if we let them buy up all the lawyers here, watch out.
I don't want to fall into their hands, and by the way, it is folly to think we'll control them with our laws, it is ludicrous to say we'll be tough on their human rights violations because the fact is, we haven't been. Why? Because they own us. As Hillary Clinton said, 'how do you get tough on your banker?'

I don't agree with all of that, but it sort of gives an indication of what's really unsettling about China becoming a superpower (assuming that happens).

China is the largest foreign holder of U.S. debt, and third largest overall after the Social Security Trust Fund and the Federal Reserve.
Add that to the fact they've just superseded the economy and woo.

well deserved, I guess
the government did what it took for them to get that #1 now they can stop enslaving the poor chineses
I don't think Obama is the one to blame whatsover, China is a monster and it was bound to happen for decades now

The ignorance in this thread and the article comments
Step outside of your Eurocentric view of the world you might see that your preconceived notions of China and Chinese natives is completely inaccurate.
