I can see where she is coming from, just a bit... It would be like all white Americans referring to themselves as European-Amercian because that's where the majority of their ancestors descend from. She's American.
All white people trace their roots back to Europe, so saying European-American is unnecessary. All black people don't trace their roots back to Africa, so it's okay to state that one black person is African-American while another may be Latin American.
Since when is a black American African American. Is that what she's trying to say?
That was my impression, especially since she pointed out she (like many black people in this country I assume) doesn't know what her actual heritage is.
Hmmm... That is true so I wonder why other races still call us African-Americans.
But I wonder why we're called Black though? We aren't Black we're several different shades though. I get what she's saying now.
That's what I got from her statement. I don't understand the uproar. I know quite of few black people that told me they don't like to be labeled African-American because it makes them feel foreign in their own country. I get it. I guess it depends on the person.
I thought her statement was pretty clear on Oprah, but it's a shame to see people "dragging" her over literally nothing.. Oh and I agree with her too she's American and that should be the end of it.
People are so dumb...
She said she doesn't want to be labeled like that. She an american, why people need to put her race before that.
She doesn't even know what her african roots are. Yes, she's black, but she's american just like them white americans.
She makes a point. People always give minorities labels such as "_______ American." You rarely see "Caucasian American" labels for whites. Didn't the term 'African American' cause some conflict at one point?
i came here to post this. I agree, we never see Caucasian American anywhere on job apps. this goes to show that certain things from the past were never completely dealt with. Why do we have to label ourselves has african american like we were born in africa we are americans
What is there exactly to drag? By saying "I'm not African-American" does not mean "I'm not Black". She is just saying she identifies her self as only an American which is not bounded by a race.
African American (Black) is her race, American is her ethnicity. you cant deny one just because you don't like the way it sounds

honey that's where your ancestors are from . Just like me. Im Mexican American. I was born in America but my race is Mexican. Caucasian is basically just another way of saying European American.

If Mexican is your race than American is her race since it's the same exact thing lol.
