Why are new Pop Stars so boring?
We had the late 90s/early 00s Pop Stars(Britney, Xtina, Shakira, Beyonce, Justin) then we had the late 00s Pop Stars(Rihanna, Taylor, Katy, and Gaga) but ever since it feels like its going downhill in terms of originality and IT factor.
The artists I mentioned have something very unique and memorable about them, at the very least they're all icons and some of them might even be legends but I don't think any new artist will reach that level of success and popularity.
What do you think?

I have to agree with this. I cannot find a lie.
Both the music and stars nowadays are lacking that umph and leaving much to be desired.

It takes much less to become famous. Before you needed a label to believe in you, craft you in development, and create an interesting a diverse product. Now all you need to do is buy some IG followers, not sound like a dying goat and you're in!
There was a time where you had to sang, dance, speak ( have a personality) and have a unique style in order to get a deal.

I wonder if these new artists were seen as interesting to those who were not in their immediate demographic though.
For example, in the late 1990s/early 2000s, there was a huge teenpop wave, thus the teenpop stars were big, and if you were a kid or a teen at the time they would have seemed more interesting and important to you than the teen pop stars of today (Selena, Ariana, OneDirection, etc.).
Similarly, Rihanna wasn't really interesting until her third album and I still don't find Taylor interesting. Katy and Gaga both came onto the scene through making a splash, so naturally they had broad interest.
Of the new generation, Ariana has the biggest potential. She has already proven to be popular, and unlike other teenpop upstars she has an actual talent.

I think that a lot of new artists didn't go through artist development like the ones of the past. So it's always about the "single" and not the person. Once the single fades, then the artist fades.
I also think we don't have the centralized platform that makes stars completely marketable off the gate. There are so many ways to discover artists but back in the 00's - if MTV and TRL said you were a star, you were a star.

I agree, the pop stars then really had to be special to stand out. Now all u need is a cute lil single and you can be a big star. Also i think it's because there isn't alot of new pop stars these days so it is kinda boring when you have nobody to compete with

This is very important...artist development is a lost concept in today's industry.
It's become a very instant-gratification-style game in the industry nowadays.
Too many stunts, shock-factor surprises and risque "moments" to drum up controversy or trending topics or followers, rather than developing a musical catalog or a fully realized career.
(Just look at the current most popular thread on ATRL, for example.)
Since the focus on the music itself is temporary and fleeting, so is the interesting persona, or "it" factor of the artist in general.
I wonder if the tide will turn.

There are a lot of good artists, you're just not looking hard enough.
Ariana Grande, Tinashe and Tove Lo are all good examples in here so far. Betty Who, too.

Yes. And it's a vicious cycle.
The lower the GP sinks, so does the POP machine overall.
Ugh.

Ariana Grande is a terrible example. Well, as far as charisma and talent goes. She's actually an excellent example for how low the standards have slipped. She's a good vocalist (when emulating others sitting in her bed) but she literally has the personality of a stone and can't perform for her life, yet people act as if she's all that.
