In Vancouver (in the neighborhood I live in anyway) most houses are pretty old but have been restored/updated to look nicer, and honestly a little odd sometimes.

Homes in the US are extremely diverse.

Those are only from the squatters area of Manila which is the most densely populated and one of the most impoverished areas of the Philippines. Many parts of the country are not like that. The situation in the provinces is far better. Many people in the provinces own houses like that. It can be found even in barangays (small villages) and not just restricted to exclusive villas.
