All of these calls of 'mediocre' sales when none of the current crop of pop stars, barring Beyoncé's out-of-the-gate sales, have come close

Only 2 singles were a hit and the album sold considerably less than Teenage Dream.

PRISM did amazing considering the sales climate we're in, ARTPOP did "ok".

Whoever calls either a flop should be smacked in the head.

Who would say its a flop? Clearly due to the success of 2 of its singles and the general popularity of the woman herself its not. However, as an era its been inconsistent and I think some people might be starting to notice things they don't care for. Which is something people pick up on here because people here sniff out weakness to exploit it regardless of how prevalent it actually is or isn't. I'm guilty of it particularly in regards to Katy because I can't stand her.

It "flopped" for Katy's standards. No one thought she was going to have another Teenage Dream era, but given her radio-friendly single choices, I think everyone was surprised that only "Roar" and "Dark Horse" were smashes, while "Unconditionally" and "Birthday" were "moderate hits", and "This Is How We Do" was a flop. It was an underperformance for Katy's standards because her first two eras were so successful, but regardless, it really wasn't a flop.

They're delusional, the era is clearly not a flop, with a 1.5M-selling album in the US only and two of the biggest hits of her career. Plus, the tour is about to reach 100M and it's not even halfway done.

Flop is not a universal, objective quantity that can be measured. It varies depending on the artist and the album. Katy was predicted to sell notably more than she actually did, as a MINIMUM. Selling below that is a flop. If someone like Becky G, who's not big, got those sales, it'd be a notable success. It all depends on who is making the album as well as their standard AND expected performance

Lmao it sold 1.5M so far in the US and will probably end up at 1.7 million and 3.8-4.0 million worldwide that's exactly what everyone expected for this era maybe except you and the other monsters who thought she was going to double teenage dream's sales or even come close

All this coming from an Xtina fan. With each album your fave releases, the sales sink lower and lower.

A flop is a flop, when something fails and sells close to nothing and way below the minimum expectations. Lets say Britney Jean as an example.

ATRL has the term twisted with "Underperformance", which means the artist didnt get to match their own standards / previous era. For example: Born This Way underperformed in comparison to The Fame era, but its a flop for no one ever!
