That's actually the traditional and historical Church teaching. It means that there is only one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church founded by Christ as necessary for salvation of whom the Pope is the visible head.and there is no salvation outside this Church. But that does not mean that all non-Catholics are automatically damned. Only those who willfully reject Christ are damned. People who are innocently ignorant of the truth but are sincerely seeking God can be saved.
