Season 6 and 7 hits home HARD. Those seasons had a lot of realism: being jobless, working part time, house is In shambles financially, unable to connect with anyone due to past relationships, feeling alienated and more independent, having sex just to feel alive, friendships in turmoil, and your friends abandoning you.

Those were serious topics that hit me hard as a college student and has become very recently relatable to me during my post-college years. The relationship between Buffy and Angel were too unrealistic and fantasy-like. The metaphors were great but Spike and Buffy had hands down the most realistic and tangible relationship easily. You could feel how much they cared for one another. Spike reformed himself and didn't turn into a bipolar mess after making love to Buffy. He also turned out to be the kind of guy Buffy didn't imagine herself ending up with, but he got her to open up to try a different kind of love. Season 6 and 7 is probably just hard for most people to watch because the topics are just so harsh and real compared to the earlier seasons. The vulnerability Buffy had in those seasons made her much more human and relatable to me. She was a super hero and strong outside, but on the inside she's very hurt and weak.
